Be My Friend - http://www.myspace.com/psychtr... '>http://www.myspace.com/psychtr... The Truth about MSG Monosodium Glutamate Clinical Nutrition What effects does MSG have on diet, obesity, health and food cravings? Because MSG is absorbed very quickly in the gastrointestinal tract (unlike glutamic acid-containing proteins in foods), MSG could spike blood plasma levels of glutamate. Glutamic acid is in a class of chemicals known as excitotoxins, high levels of which have been shown in animal studies to cause damage to areas of the brain unprotected by the blood-brain barrier and that a variety of chronic diseases can arise out of this neurotoxicity. Dr. Vincent Bellonzi is a chiropractor and a Certified Clinical Nutritionist. He has been in practice for over 12 years. He received his Doctorate from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in 1991. Since 1998, Dr. Bellonzi has practiced in the Austin area. He works with athletes at every level to provide sports conditioning and rehabilitation. You excite my reward system you bald devil you.... I FUCKING love MSG

The real victims might be pre-born and young babies with immature blood-brain barrier. Glutamate is part of the process of neuron death under stress... why risk adding unnatural levels of free glutamate to the diet, with possibility of stressing and killing neurons in babies? Guess what... fish oils (essential fatty acids) are pre-cursors to natural endo-cannabinoids... Fish oil is not somehow magically good for us... researchers are building evidence for hypotheses how the whole system works.
dmgoedde (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Excess dietary free glutamate (as opposed to locked in a protein chain) may be the worst accidental poisoning of recorded history. NATURAL endo-cannabinoid (EC) system is thought to have evolved 600 million years ago as neuro-protective scheme. On-demand EC's generated as-needed (brain trauma being one case) to soak up excess glutamate and stop the excitotoxicity. Natural protection only evolved to handle natural levels of glutamate from very natural non-processed foods. Not McDonalds.

This is great - HOWEVER the force of the arguments could be approx 100x stronger and clearer if Dr Vincent commented on free glutamate's role in neuron stress and death, and efficacy of dietary glutamate crossing the blood-brain barrier, and how neo- pre- and post-natal babies may not have intact blood brain barrier yet to prevent gross transport. Non-scientist people are left with an incorrect impression that excess free dietary glutamate is merely not good, or another semi-bad thing to avoid.

montelka (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
what about the subway...i love the subway!

@theblackmanOyeah: i dont know or care what he may have to gain. aspartame, apart from being bad for your health(i never said it wasnt) just tastes effin' nasty. people shouldnt demonize msg. its not cigarette smoke or alcohol. it a delicious flavor enhancer that deserves a place on my chinese food. anything in excess is bad for you, or so ive heard, and i guess there is a chance msg could be harmful to tools that only eat the over-processed junkfoods that contain the highest amounts of it.
theblackmanOyeah (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
@shrivalup still, what would he have to gain out of saying msg is bad for you? msg and aspartame ARE bad for any person.
